Teman Bumil (Native Legacy)
Teman Bumil in its original native form. I maintained and shipped features on both codebases, Objective-C on iOS and Kotlin on Android, and raised iOS crash-free users from 40% to 95–97% before the 2020 Flutter rebuild.
Overview
Teman Bumil was already an established app for Indonesian moms-to-be when I joined the mobile team in 2019. I maintained and shipped features on both native codebases, Objective-C for iOS and Kotlin for Android, and kept them at feature parity until the Flutter rebuild in early 2020. It was my first deep work in mobile.
The problem
Only 40% of iOS users were crash-free when I joined. Android and iOS were separate native codebases that had to ship the same features.
Project Focus & Learning
I stabilized the iOS app, kept two native codebases in step, and shipped new features.
1. Crash-free rate turnaround
When I joined, 40% of iOS users were crash-free. I refactored about 70% of the Objective-C codebase and added unit tests to catch regressions earlier. The rate rose to 95–97%, and the QA automation team saw the difference in their own runs.
2. Two native codebases
Maintained both apps in parallel, Kotlin on Android and Objective-C on iOS, so users got the same features on both.
3. Feature development
Built the animated milestone tracker, checklist, tips and recipes pages, ads banner integration, discussion threads and online classes, plus login with Google, Apple, Facebook and email and password.
Architecture and trade-offs
Refactor and test, not rewrite
I refactored about 70% of the Objective-C codebase and added unit tests, so regressions showed up earlier. A full rebuild came later, as the 2020 Flutter migration.
Feature parity across two stacks
Every feature had to be built twice, in Kotlin and in Objective-C. That doubled the work per feature until the Flutter rebuild.
